Meg McCarney addresses seasonal affective disorder in her essay for This Is My Brave College Edition in 2019-2020. Meg is a student at Lesley University studying Creative Writing. She is from Norton, Massachusetts, where she grew up with two loving parents and a younger sister, who is radiant beyond all words. In her free time, she loves writing poems, eating fries, watching TED Talks and taking impromptu trips to IKEA. Daring to be brave by working towards better managing her mental illness changed the way she views her life and herself. While it isn’t something she can ever eradicate, she has established that she is the one in control. She will no longer sit shotgun and let an invisible force take the wheel. This is her story. Meg hopes you walk away from this show feeling emboldened to challenge your own mind and speak your own truth, knowing that you are not alone. With every story told, we are one step closer to being visible.
Meg McCarney addresses Seasonal Affective Disorder
"[Mental Illness] is a soundtrack that will follow me throughout my life. At times its faded in the background. Other times, it reaches a crescendo. I have to follow these ups and downs and try my best to understand them. They are a part of who I am. I can't scare my seasonal depression away. I just have to show her that I can put up a fight."
