For Anne Marie and I, it was comforting returning to the Artisphere Spectrum Theater. The familiar space made us feel at home.
Nerves were buzzing as we watched the theater seats fill up. Backstage, 2014 cast member Mary Leaphart led us through a series of breathing exercises to calm us. We took deep breaths and set our intentions for the show. Mine was acceptance. That every person in the theater would accept us as we are, appreciate our journeys, and pull us close with open arms after the performance.
We may have had a few minor hiccups during the show, but that didn't interfere with getting our messages across. We shined a light on our darkness and it helped us heal.
I hope you'll take the time to hear our stories. Share them so others can hear our messages of hope and inspiration. It is possible to overcome mental illness. When we talk openly about our path to recovery, we can save a life.
