Our LA show produced by The TLC Foundation, is January 22, 2017. We are excited to introduce you to cast member Ottum Yates!
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
Hi my name is Ottum. I am 33 years old.
I am from Los Angeles and currently living in the Southbay.
I am married to my soul mate and best friend of 16 years.
Our daughter, 9 years old, has been my caretaker and inspiration.
Our emotional service dog has saved my life more than once.
… and then there is Anxiety Blob, Meet Blahber, my Anxiety Blob.
How has mental illness affected your life?
I learned to mask my anxiety and depression as early as the age of 2. Because, that’s what you’re supposed to do. STIGMAS.
Before becoming disabled I was extremely active, outgoing, independent, and successful. As my physical health got worse, so did my mental.
I remember ‘her’. The girl I used to be, the person I thought I was; the person I thought I was going to be. I compare myself to ‘her’ all the time. Scared and confused; hopelessly lost. Generated pamphlets, exhausted hard copies, and criticism for a copay.
Why did you want to be a part of This Is My Brave?
I know what it’s like to feel alone; to lose family and friends. I understand blame, neglect, embarrassment, and disappointment. GUILT. I live with ‘her’ everyday. I want to be a part of This Is My Brave to share my story; to reflect the feelings and ideas of someone that lives with and is affected by mental illness. It wasn't until I leaned into the uncomfortable and just showed up that things changed. I found my tribe. I hope that you join me by leaning into the uncomfortable.
