Meet Denver Cast Member Debbie Scheer

Tell us a little about yourself.

Meet Denver Cast Member Debbie Scheer

Hello there! I’m Debbie Scheer a single mom of two amazing little humans. I am a comedian, emcee and auctioneer. I believe that if we can laugh about ‘it’ we can learn about ‘it’ and that core value has been front and center when it comes to the type of comedy I choose to do as well as the shows that I produce/host. My comedy ranges from single parenting, adoption, GLBTQ issues and sexuality. When society sends the message that we should keep quiet about a certain topic, I do just the opposite and have created shows that combine comedy with education as a way to peel back the layers of issues that effect us all. From adult sex education and comedy to talking about the issues that effect women as we age, I believe that being able to laugh about something opens us up to an entirely different way of learning.

How has mental illness affected your life?

My anxiety is something that I have joked about for years because joking about it was so much easier than admitting that anxiety had a negative impact on my life. I only recently admitted to myself that yes, this is real, it is not something I can just “think away” and it has had serious implications on so many areas of my life. The older I get the more I realize how anxiety has shown up in my life. From being told I was high maintenance and not fully understanding why someone would say that, to making fun of my own anxious quirks in order to diminish the seriousness of the impact it had on my life. Oh the places my mind can travel and sadly the journey isn’t always a good one yet the exit strategy seems almost impossible. From wild insecurities to paralyzing irrational fears, anxiety has for many years has had a front row seat in my life.

Why did you want to be a part of This is My Brave?

It is the most vulnerable of experiences to get on a stage and bare your soul. However by doing so and stepping into the light and sharing our stories we expose the truth regarding the stigma that surrounds mental illness. This stigma starts with the fact that people do not want to talk about mental illness. The conversation elicits all sorts of emotions and fears and as a culture we are poorly equipped to engage in these desperately needed conversations.

I wanted to share my story because I believe that if we can laugh about it we can learn about it and the more we learn about mental illness the more we chip away at the misinformation that surrounds it. For me, adding humor to our dialogue around mental illness is of paramount importance. Some would say that by finding humor within our journey and experiences with mental illness we diminish the seriousness of this illness. I passionately disagree and instead believe that when we infuse humor into our conversations about mental illness we elevate the human experience and it is that elevation that enables us to experience the entire experience.

What inspires you to stay mentally healthy?

My children inspire me to stay mentally healthy. They are the reason to dig deep, get uncomfortable, feel vulnerable and share my story.

What do you hope the audience takes away from this show?

I want people to walk away thinking that it is ok to inject humor into these very serious conversations. That humor does not diminish the seriousness but instead, humor adds to the total experience. I hope people walk away with a new understand about the ways that mental illness shows up and how it effects the people they care about. That the stigma that surrounds mental illness does so much harm and creates so much shame and that powerful healing can occur when we share our stories and engage in the long overdue conversations about mental illness.
