Introducing Anna Marie Melka from This Is My Brave Baltimore!

Hi, my name is Anna Marie. I am from Baltimore, Maryland; and come from a big family! Soccer, swing dancing, and sewing are some of my favorite hobbies. Having an adventurous, yet gentle spirit, with a joyful and unique sweetness, are ways others would describe me. My faith, family, and community of friends are my core support and foundation.

In auditioning and becoming part of This Is My Brave, I feel more empowered and freedom over my mental illness. For over twenty years, depression and anxiety have affected my daily life often beyond my control. I have wrestled with overcoming the challenges they bring; and, have learned many tools to be proactive in taking control of my health. As someone who has worked very hard to get to a place where I am happier and healthier, my compassionate spirit drew me to being part of the This Is My Brave organization. It is my dream to help those struggling with mental illness, especially through writing a book for kids to give them hope, and by just sharing my story now.

It is my sincere wish that those watching the stories and performances of our Baltimore This Is My Brave, would take away an awareness of compassion and hope for others battling mental illness. With our vulnerability and openness in sharing our personal life experiences, I hope others will be closer to understanding how we can live with these diagnoses, yet also live stable and good lives. There is such a stigma on the hot topic of mental illness; however, it is entirely quite common among most people or among family members.

True charity and love can conquer these fears and stigmas that has been engrained in our society over mental illness. Let us challenge each other to see beyond the label or diagnosis, but value the integrity of each human person. There are so many ways we all fight to overcome challenges and obstacles, whether it be physical or mental health; but we are all in this battle together and can only grow stronger through sharing our stories.

So, now I am looking forward to sharing my story, and joining in the efforts of This Is My Brave, to bring hope and encouragement to each one of you! 😊
