Holiday Gift Guide

Hi Brave Community, Program Manager Katie here! One thing I love is shopping. Another thing I love is giving the PERFECT gift – those gifts that you see and you immediately know who it belongs to. This year has obviously been a tough one for many reasons. We wanted to put together a little gift guide to help out with the holiday stress and hopefully give you some “Best Gift Giver Ever” ideas. With mental health in mind, we’ve chosen a little bit of everything for your purchasing pleasure. Almost every business listed is either female / minority owned or has a give back factor. We hope you enjoy!

Brave Gear

Do you love This Is My Brave and want more ways to show your Brave? Check out our new This Is My Brave merch shop! Gifting Brave swag is ALWAYS a good idea! Choose from new t-shirts and hoodies to gift the whole family. And don’t forget to download our new theme song “Tell Them I’m Brave” by Natalie Layne and Phoebe Scott. I’m currently collecting this new Brave gear one hoodie at a time, and I have no shame of having the same piece of beloved clothing in every color!

Accessories Worth Talking About

Pura Vida Bracelets is one of my favorite brands. Not only are their social media posts reminiscent of a beautiful, carefree beach getaway, but they have a special charity collection in which they have donated nearly $2.8 billion to over 175 charities worldwide. Pura Vida offers great gift options ranging from bracelets, necklaces, rings, and more that are perfect for friends, family members, coworkers, you name it. Who doesn’t love a little bit of sunshine and a reminder of the “pure life” on their wrist everyday?

My Intent bracelets have made a name for themselves over the past few years. From celebrity endorsements to television features, it may have seemed like they snuck up on you. But what does a My Intent bracelet (or necklace) mean? It’s a word that you want to embrace for the year. Maybe it’s something you want to work on. Maybe it’s something you hold as your truth. Maybe it reminds you of something important to you. Choose a word, choose a style, and wear it everyday. It serves as a GREAT conversation starter, which as you know, we at This Is My Brave love starting conversations.

The Self Care We All Need Right Now

Do you follow Tiny Buddha on social media? If not, you should. The account is full of daily reminders of self love, and who doesn’t need that? In addition to some amazing online content, Tiny Buddha created a little something just for This Is My Brave! For those who want to prioritize self-care but lack the time and tools to do so, Tiny Buddha’s Mindfulness set combines carefully curated products with practical wellness guides that outline simple daily rituals for calm and well-being. For just $45 (with a portion of the proceeds going to This Is My Brave!) and a one stop shop, this Tiny Buddha kit includes Soothing Bath & Shower Gel, Calming Essential Oil Roll on, Relaxing Pillow Spray, Lychee Flower Scented Candle, and a Daily Mindfulness Practice Guide. Self care Friday night, anyone?

While we’re talking about self care boxes, we must mention our very own College Edition alum, Mallory Gothelf’s pandemic-born business, Find Your/self Boxes. What’s different about this box? YOU get to CUSTOMIZE it! Mallory does all of the hard work behind the scenes to find the best of the best self care items, and she presents them right to you. Slippers, stuffed animal heating pads, fidget toys, candles – she has done her research! You simply pick whichever items speak to you (I mean, the person you’re shopping for), add them to your cart, and voila! Mallory will put the box together and ship it right to you or the recipient. We’re so proud of you, Mallory!

Something I have yet to purchase for myself (hello my gift givers!) is a weighted blanket. I don’t know how I have lasted this long without one, to be honest. Weighted blankets are said to reduce anxiety and feel like a night-long gentle hug. (Remind me what I’ve been waiting for again?) We chose this specific blanket by Baloo not only for its rave reviews, but because the company’s environmentally friendly approach continues to evolve as they grow. Their growth = smaller carbon footprint. Additionally, a portion of their proceeds goes to the Pajama Program, supporting the most vulnerable children in our communities at bedtime. Win, win!

All Things Comfy

Cold weather makes cozy socks a necessity. Add in playful prints, styles for everyone you know, AND a good cause? It’s a PERFECT gift. For every item purchased, Bombas donates an item to homeless shelters. To date, they have donated more than 40 million items to more than 2,500 community organizations. They’ve even expanded to clothing for men, women, and kids beyond just socks, so check them out and feel good knowing that your purchase is actually being gifted twice and making a difference for those in need.

When MeUndies reached out to us at the end of 2019 to talk about a 2020 partnership, we were so excited! Through getting to know the team over at MeUndies, we found such an oddly perfect pairing between their charitable arm and our mission. We live with mental illness (or we know and love someone who does). We often feel we need to hide our mental illness, so we don’t appear to be _______ (fill in the blank with any of those words we don’t like to use). MeUndies creates these fun, colorful, incredibly comfy underwear sets (and loungewear!), made boldly to encourage its customers to embrace who they are. You don’t usually see peoples’ undies, just like you don’t usually see someone’s mental health struggles, so getting comfortable with who you are and what makes you, you is an empowering movement to embrace. Bonus here is that you can use the discount code TIMB15 for 15% off your first purchase. Now go get yourself and your family matching onesies for your at home holiday photos this year!

Thought Provoking Finds

Books ALWAYS make a great gift! Because of the uncertainty of 2020, a lot of us have turned to reading whether to escape for a bit, to understand ourselves a little more, or to gain insight on something important to us. I want to start with recommending Ashley Womble’s Everything Is Going to Be Ok. The way that Ashley breaks down the step by step journey of mental health is so helpful. She published this book in 2019, and it couldn’t be more relevant today. New to therapy? New to medication? Not sure what you’re actually supposed to be doing? Let Ashley give you some insight on the process, and remember that Everything Is Going to Be Ok.

Lewis Howes, a former professional football player and two-sport
All-American athlete, authored a necessary book geared towards men – The Mask of Masculinity: How Men Can Embrace Vulnerability, Create Strong Relationships, and Live Their Fullest Lives Howes discusses how his childhood filled with sports and competition left him in an unknown world of toxic masculinity, so he forged his way through understanding that it is ok (in fact more than ok) for men to be vulnerable, embrace their struggles, and ask for help. We need books like this right now, so really regardless of your gender, check this one out. And of course, follow Howes on social media. He’s got some great daily insights that make a little sense of all of the confusing situations we have right now.

Last but not least – you MUST check out Melody Moezzi’s The Rumi Prescription: How an Ancient Mystic Poet Changed My Modern Manic Life. Give yourself time on this one. Enjoy it and savor it like the best chocolate cake you’ve ever had. Melody beautifully incorporates the poet Rumi’s teachings and how she has translated them to be relevant – and essential – today. Her writing, her style, her diverse background, and her intricate voice may just make you as big of a Rumi fan as she is.

In my search for everything holiday gifts, I knew I had to include the kids in our lives! Stumbling upon Coping Skills for Kids was PERFECT. Not only is this a black female-owned business, but the resources are amazing for our mental health-conscious generation. Choose from workbooks, posters, cue cards, and even courses to help teach the kiddos in your life about being proactive with their mental and emotional health. I cannot wait to gift these to my niece and nephew this year!

Stocking Stuffers (aka Must Haves)

If you live in Chicago, and you haven’t gone to Sip of Hope yet, I suggest you stop what you’re doing, and go right now! (Check their hours and COVID restrictions, of course). If you don’t live in Chicago like myself, you can learn about this incredible business that is the world’s first coffee shop where 100% of the proceeds support proactive suicide prevention and mental health education. Check out their story and their social media accounts, and then go buy some coffee and gear! I’ve ordered coffee from Sip of Hope several times, and it is some delicious coffee going to an incredible cause. Two things near and dear to my heart – coffee and mental health! I have gifted it too, and I can tell you that sending a little bag of coffee and a “It’s ok not to be ok” mug goes a long way. Receiving a text message that says “I’m crying. I don’t even know what to say. Thank you so much.” definitely makes giving better than receiving.

We love Emily McDowell and her way with words! Emily creates everything from notecards, stickers, mugs, planners, books – everything you and your bestie love to collect. More than anything – she takes a risk with some of her pieces, stating things just as they are – and I love her for that. For instance, a greeting card that says “Heads Up: When this is over, I totally plan on invading your personal space. I miss you so much.” Or even with her more, ahem, colorful word choices, she somehow captures exactly how we have felt this year. Check her out, have a laugh, and find something for everyone on your list!

One thing I never tire of is a fabulous planner. I still love putting pen to paper, checking things off my to do list, and having pretty places to keep it all. I don’t think you can go wrong with gifting a planner (unless the person is REALLY big on tech…they may not appreciate it). But for those that DO – I love the Erin Condren monthly planners. You can customize almost every aspect of it, and it feels like you’re carrying around a little book of you. It will keep you super organized, and it will give you little pieces of joy and insight each time you look at it. Personalize away, and gift this to your planner loving people!

I’ve always been the sticker person that would hold onto the *best* stickers from those 50 cent sticker machines, and then I never actually used them because I was always waiting for the most perfect place to stick them. Thankfully I’ve grown out of that, and STICKERS ARE BACK! These Big Moods stickers are fun, colorful, and inspiring. Stick them on your laptop, your water bottle, the new planner you just bought – no better time than the present! Something we also love about Big Moods is that a portion of their proceeds goes to Active Minds, so spread the sticker cheer and give back while doing so!

You Can Gift an App?!

YOU CAN GIFT AN APP! How many times do you stop yourself from downloading an app when you see a cost attached to it? I know I do! Then I hear about how amazing certain apps are, but for some reason, I can’t justify spending money on it!? BUT – if someone would gift me the app, I would be thrilled! Here are two really great, highly rated apps PERFECT for your mental health.

Headspace combines meditation with mindfulness for any goal you have set for yourself! If you’re newer to meditation, Headspace is a great option. Need better sleep? Working on exercising more? Let this soft spoken, graphically adorable, highly intuitive app help you along the way! For information on gifting the app, click here.

Similar to Headspace, Calm is another highly rated meditation and mindfulness app. You can set reminders for yourself to step back and breathe, listen to music that infuses your soul, and create better, healthier habits for yourself. Some reviewers state that Calm is best used when you have some meditation experience under your belt. For your meditation-loving partner, gift them with the Calm app!

One more thing – please also shop local this year! Our communities need us, so be sure to stop by your local restaurants, boutiques, book stores, and coffee shops to share the holiday spirit. Maybe share a Brave story while you’re there? We’re all in this together, and a little Brave conversation could be just what someone needs today.

Hugs, Katie
